Tatum, Freddy and Carlos looked back at the job that they had done on KJ and started to laugh. They joked about how they were going to do the same thing to Drew when they got the chance.
"Look, he's crying," Carlos called out when he noticed from the doorway. "The little baby's blubbering." They all started to laugh again. When they got their hands on Drew, they planned on making him cry, too, for making them go through the trouble of going out there for nothing. They opened the door to leave and all hell broke loose.
Drew hadn't gone to get the principal, he went to make sure that she was as far away from the gym as possible. He'd run from one side of the campus to the other and was told to slow down more than once. He made it to the gym in just enough time to see Tatum land his first blow on KJ's face. Everything inside of him told him to run inside to help his friend. He’d never felt this way before, but he believed that the word for it was bloodthirsty. His hand tightened around the baseball bat that he’d grabbed from the equipment room, every time he saw Tatum hit KJ. When he saw them tire of their game and head for the door, Drew stepped back into the shadows and waited.
The door came open, and it took a moment for the bullies to realize what they were seeing. That moment was too long. Drew ran at Carlos first and swung the bat at his knee. It was a glancing blow, but it was enough to send Carlos down in pain. Next Drew used the head of the bat to jab Freddy in the stomach, and when he bent over, he hit him soundly in the thigh. Two down. Drew then grabbed the bat like a riot cop would hold a baton, a hand on each end holding it across his body. He pushed a shocked Tatum back in to the gym.
"What are you doing?" Tatum screamed. Drew ignored him, he looked over his shoulder and called out to his first two victims. "Don't get up!"
Turning his attention back to Tatum, Drew tried his best to look tough, like what he was doing was something that he did all of the time.
"You and me, Tatum." He said as he rolled the bat over to KJ who was struggling to his knees, wiping his eyes and still managing to look surprised.
"What?" the still confused Tatum asked.
